We know very little about the builders of Glastonbury Tor and its true meaning. Abbot Richard Whiting was executed here in 1549 on the orders of Thomas Cromwell, the first Earl of Essex. Others disagree saying the Chalice Well is probably a Victorian invention. Glastonbury Tor, Holy Well or Chalice Well of red healing waters have been and are major inspirations in my life and work. Legend says the well was built by the Druids to hide the cup used during the Last Supper, the Holy Grail, which was filled with the blood of the crucified Christ and brought to England by Joseph of Arimathea. There is an old well the so-called Chalice Well, at the foot of the Tor where the water, blood red from the iron oxide in the surrounding bedrock, bubbles up with a specific sound like the heartbeat. Thousand of years ago it was an island, or part of an island rising up out of the water with the now flatlands being well under water. The lake has since dried up, but the Tor still stands as a reminder of its existence. This legend is based on the fact that Glastonbury was once an island in a lake. Legend has it that the Tor is the site of Avalon, the mythical island from the Arthurian legends.
